In the Southern Italian region of Calabria there are currently two areas
with national parks, Sila to the north and Aspromonte to the south. In
this post we will deal purely with the Aspromonte Mountains and the main
ski resort, Gambarie.
Gambarie offers many summer and winter
activities, even for the most demanding mountain lovers. With a ski area
consisting of about 10 km of slopes. In addition to the Alpine and
Nordic skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, you can take part in an
endless series of sporting activities, from mountain biking, trekking,
hiking, Quad biking, horse, riding, golf, tennis, soccer and sport
fishing.
The Aspromonte is the most southerly and sits in the
province of Reggio Calabria. From the 1995 meter summit of Montalto you
can see both the Jonio and Tirreno seas and a 360° panorama which allows
a view of far off Etna and the Aeolian islands.
Aspromonte means
‘bitter mountain’ which suggests the severity of the environment, but
for the Greek immigrants of Magna Grecia it signified ‘White Mountain or
‘Monte Bianco’.
Look out for the waterfalls of Maesano and
Forgiarelle and Lake Costantino which was formed only in 1973 by a huge
landslide which blocked the Buonamico stream.
Of the many walks,
why not start with the ‘Sentiero del Brigante’ which links Gambarie with
Stilo. There is also the ‘English Way’ named after the enthusiasm
Edward Lear demonstrated for the area.
